Programs & Services

Our counseling program at Mills Middle School offers a wide variety of services for your child. Please contact your student's counselor for general questions. Below, please review the variety of programs and services that are currently available at Mills Middle School.

Individual Counseling:

Counselors are available to meet with students on an individual basis for any social, emotional, or academic concern. Students may fill out the Counseling Appointment Form to sign up to see their counselor individually, while other times, referrals are made through staff members, parents or peers.

Group Counseling:

Throughout the school year, various support groups may be offered on a variety of subjects. Subjects include divorce/separation or family changes, grief, anger management, girls group, social skills and general support. When offered, groups meet once a week, during rotating periods.  Students may be invited to participate in a counseling group through a staff or parent referral, or they may refer themselves. Written parent permission is required in order for students participate in any of our counseling groups.

Classroom Presentations:

Throughout the school year, counselors will present a variety of information to students typically based on grade level.  6th and 7th grade focuses on an introduction to Naviance, our web-based tool to provide various study skills and acadmic lessons.  Counselors conduct various lessons and provide information about middle school success as well as introduction to high school graduation requirements and the college options.  8th graders receive information about transitioning to high school, graudation requirements, college options as well as take an interest inventory to help provide self-refelctive feedback and career information.

Welcome Everybody (WEB):

Trained 8th grade WEB Leaders facilitate 6th Grade Orientation via a series of small group activities and a campus tour. WEB Leaders also do social follow-ups with students throughout the year. Academic follow-ups in include classroom presentations on important topics such as Rumors, Teamwork, and Attitude.

Point Break:

The purpose of Point Break is to improve the behaviors, values and attitudes of high school students on their campuses and in their communities, intervening before acts of bullying, hatred or violence occur. As a result, better learning environments are created, relationships are forged and reconciliation begins. Students, who before the workshop bullied others, often feel a sense of empathy towards their fellow students and the desire to stop their bullying behavior after experiencing Point Break.

Student Study Team (SST) Meetings:

SST meetings are designed to assist struggling students with strategies that may help improve their academic performance. These meetings are typically held either before and after school and include the child's school counselor, administrator, teachers, parents and most importantly, the student!  Teachers provide input on student progress and suggest ways for students to become more successful. The information and action plan is typed up and provided to families after the meeting. We suggest placing this action plan in a place where it will be seen frequently by both the student and parents.  This helps students remain focused on the strategies that were recommended.  After having implemented all of the strategies on the action plan, if improvement is not noticed in 6-8 weeks, we recommend contacting the school counselor again to set up a second SST meeting.

After-School Tutoring:

Our Libraryis open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:15pm - 4:00pm to provide homework help and tutoring to students.  The library is staffed with a credentialed teacher and the computer lab is available for computer based assignments.
